Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 has convicted and sentenced seven individuals, including Awami League (AL) General Secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader, to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 Mass Uprising. The three-member second tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the judgment this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the other convicts are AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Executive Committee Member Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Md Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Bangladesh Chhatra League President Md Saddam Hossain, and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan. The tribunal ordered the confiscation of 50 percent of all movable and immovable properties of Quader, Nasim, Arafat, Parash, and Nikhil.
The judgment also stipulated that compensation should be provided to those killed or injured during the July-August 2024 events, or their family members, using proceeds from the sale of the confiscated assets, facilitated through the July Foundation or another statutory organization.
All the convicts, including Quader, remain at large and were tried in absentia. Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam, along with other prosecutors, was present during the judgment, while Advocate M Hasan Imam represented Quader, Nasim, and Arafat, and Advocate Ishrat Jahan represented the Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders.
On August 17, the tribunal had reserved its judgment after concluding arguments in the case. The prosecution sought maximum punishment and the confiscation of properties for the accused. Arrest warrants were issued on December 18, 2025, against the seven individuals after the tribunal took cognizance of the formal charges filed against them.
