Dhaka: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has expressed concerns over the increasing use of abusive language in the country's political landscape over the past two years. The committee highlighted the potential role of the Cyber Security Act in addressing this issue during its first meeting.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the committee emphasized the importance of responsible behavior by all parties involved to combat misinformation and propaganda on social media platforms. This call to action was outlined in a press release following the meeting, which took place at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban under the leadership of Committee Chairman Md Amanullah Aman.
The committee underscored the necessity for accountability within the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, advocating for transparent operations. It also called for renewed energy in the ministry's activities, distancing from the past 17 years' challenges. The contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in upholding journalists' freedom were acknowledged.
The committee also pointed out the significance of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) as a vital venue for journalists to express their views and perform their duties freely. Recommendations were made for necessary reforms and upgrades to the JPC's facilities, including its auditorium.
The meeting reviewed the overall operations of the ministry along with its subordinate departments and agencies. Attendees included Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman, State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury, and other committee members such as Md Ashraf Uddin, Md Mustafizur Rahman Babul, Md Mazibur Rahman, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, Fahmida Haq, Md Shafiqul Islam, and Nazmun Nahar. Senior officials from the ministry and Parliament Secretariat were also present.
