Dhaka: Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has highlighted serious issues in the evaluation process of this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, following a significant increase in the number of students achieving GPA-5 after a re-evaluation of their answer scripts.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister revealed that 3,079 students achieved GPA-5 following the re-evaluation process, indicating substantial flaws in the initial assessment of the examination scripts. Speaking at the "National University Scholarship and Vice-Chancellor Award" ceremony held at the International Mother Language Institute, Milon emphasized the importance of holding accountable those examiners who improperly assessed the SSC scripts. He also advocated for proper training to be provided for examiners to prevent future occurrences of such errors.
The minister underscored the necessity of enhancing monitoring mechanisms within educational institutions to elevate the quality of education. He proposed that the attendance of teachers and their teaching methods should be monitored centrally to ensure effectiveness. In relation to the National University, Milon suggested that affiliated colleges could implement classroom monitoring through their own management systems to ensure educational standards are met.
Addressing the broader educational landscape, Milon stressed the importance of aligning courses with market demands, improving teacher training, and updating the curriculum to improve the quality of education offered by the National University. He also mentioned that 2 percent of the GDP has been allocated to education in the national budget, highlighting the government's commitment to educational development. As part of the curriculum reforms, four new books will be introduced for classes IV and VI next year, with further revisions planned for 2028.
Underlining the government's prioritization of education, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Milon pointed out the significant investments being made in research and highlighted the need for the National University to effectively utilize allocated funds to instigate genuine improvements in the education sector.
In the same event, 57 students were awarded the Vice-Chancellor Award, each receiving a certificate, crest, and Tk 25,000. Additionally, 2,897 students received scholarships of Tk 6,000 each, amounting to a total of Tk 1.73 crore, funded by the university.
