Noakhali: A court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment and another to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the sensational Saidul Islam Shahin murder case in Companyganj upazila of the district in 2012. The court also fined life term convict Md Saiful Islam alias Rubel Taka 50,000 while another convict Nur Uddin Shamir Taka 10,000. The court also acquitted four other accused in the case for lack of evidence.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, District and Sessions Judge of the Noakhali Special Judge Court Md Shawkat Ali pronounced the verdict around 11.30 am. All six accused were present in the courtroom. Convict Saiful Islam Rubel is the son of Siraj Alam of Ward No-9 under Charkakra union of Companyganj upazila, while Nur Uddin Shamir is the son of Nur Nabi of the same ward.
The prosecution revealed that on August 6, 2012, the convicts engaged in an altercation with Saidul Islam over cutting a tree on the boundary in front of the residence of Salim Ullah at Charkakra union. During a mediation meeting over the dispute, the accused allegedly attacked Saidul Islam Shahin in a pre-planned manner, inserting an iron rod into his throat and beating him indiscriminately. Saidul died on the spot from his injuries.
Special Public Prosecutor of the court Tapaskor Hossain Md Khairul confirmed the matter.
