Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday sought support from business leaders and the media in implementing the government's plans to address the country's power and energy challenges, emphasizing the need for stability to execute its initiatives effectively during its tenure. He expressed optimism that gas supply to industries would return to its previous level by Tuesday evening.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister addressed a three-hour meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat, attended by business leaders and media personalities. He warned that instability could adversely affect business, trade, and the economy, underscoring the importance of allowing the government to complete its planned work. The Prime Minister described the current power and energy crisis as an inherited problem, indicating that it would not be resolved within a short period. However, he assured that the government had identified issues and was implementing solutions.
State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit presented a roadmap for addressing these challenges. Tarique Rahman explained that a gas supply disruption resulted from an accident at one of the country's floating LNG terminals, but the problem had been resolved. Plans to install a third terminal are underway, set to be connected by December 2027.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Bangladesh's economic goals, including becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2034, depend on stable power and energy supplies. He urged for cooperation from the business community, emphasizing that resolving energy challenges is crucial for economic progress. Tarique Rahman encouraged the media to accurately communicate government plans to prevent misinformation and stressed that all government members were working collaboratively to bring positive changes to the nation.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, various government advisors, business leaders, and media representatives attended the meeting, reflecting a multi-sectoral effort to address the challenges. The Prime Minister reiterated the need for cooperation to achieve better outcomes for the country.
