Dhaka: The Election Commission has announced that the first phase of Union Parishad (UP) elections will be held on November 12. This initial phase will encompass all Union Parishads in 80 upazilas across 63 districts.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Election Commission has planned to conduct the UP elections nationwide in seven phases. These plans were discussed and decided during a preparatory meeting held by the commission on Monday. Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanauallah shared these details with reporters following the meeting.
The schedule outlines that the second phase of the elections will occur on December 13, followed by the third phase on December 30. The subsequent phases are planned for January 17, February 4, April 12, and May 27, respectively. Sanaullah mentioned that there are a total of 4,580 Union Parishads throughout the country.
In preparation for the local government elections, the commission will engage in discussions with all registered political parties. These dialogues are scheduled for September 23, 24, and 25, with two representatives from each political party invited to participate. The commission aims to ensure that the local government polls meet the national election standards.
The Election Commission intends to initiate the UP elections simultaneously in all 64 districts, except for Thakurgaon. This exception is due to the already announced schedule for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, which is set to take place on October 29.
