Bhola: Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Monday emphasized that Bangladesh aspires to establish a friendly relationship with India, grounded in mutual respect, good-neighbourliness, and equality. This statement was made during his interaction with journalists following a meeting with district administration officials at the Bhola Circuit House.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Speaker criticized the 17 years of Awami League rule, claiming that the period resulted in extensive damage across various sectors and levels in the country. He attributed the country's precarious situation to what he described as the previous government's illegal activities, which he argued brought Bangladesh nearly to the brink of destruction. Ahmad highlighted the importance of time to recover from these setbacks and to steer the nation back towards development, acknowledging that seven months was too brief a period for such a recovery.
The Speaker mentioned that the reform process has commenced, even though significant legal measures are yet to be implemented. He expressed optimism regarding the ongoing changes, particularly in laws and regulations, and urged for a consensus between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which he referred to as the country's major popular political party, and the opposition parties on the reform proposals in the upcoming session of Parliament.
Ahmad pointed out that while the reform process has not formally begun from a legal perspective, reaching an agreement on the reform proposals during the next parliamentary session would be crucial. He stressed that swift implementation of these reforms, including necessary legal amendments, would enable the population to move past the misrule of previous years.
Concluding his visit to Bhola, Speaker Ahmad was honored with a guard of honor before departing for Dhaka, wrapping up his four-day tour.
