Dhaka: A Barishal court on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to life imprisonment for killing his wife over an extramarital affair with his sister-in-law, 16 years ago. Barishal District and Session Judge Moshtaque Ahmed handed down the punishment.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the condemned convict is Zahirul Islam, a Local Government Rural Development (LGRD) engineer of Baufal upazila in Barishal district. The court also sentenced another accused in the case, Abdul Malek, to five years in jail.
The prosecution revealed that Zahirul developed an extramarital affair with his sister-in-law, Ruma Akter. When Zahirul's wife, Nazma Zahir, discovered the affair, Zahirul took her to Ali International Hotel in Barishal city on February 15, 2010, where he killed her by slitting her throat.
Nilufa Irine, the sister of Nazma, filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station. Following investigations, police submitted a chargesheet against Zahirul and the hotel manager, Abdul Malek.
