Dhaka: A court has sentenced Imam-ul Bashar, a dismissed accountant of the Court of Wards for the historic Bhawal Raj Estate under the Land Reform Board, to 14 years in prison in a graft case. Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 pronounced the judgement this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court found Imam-ul Bashar guilty under Section 409 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. He received a sentence of seven years' rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Taka 987,400.
Additionally, Imam-ul Bashar was sentenced to another seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Taka 50,000 under Sections 467/471 of the Penal Code. In the event of non-payment of the fine, he would face an additional three months' imprisonment. The court specified that the sentences under the two sections would run concurrently.
The court also ordered that the embezzled sum of Taka 987,400, imposed as a fine, must be deposited into the bank account maintained in the name of the Court of Wards for the Bhawal Raj Estate.
