Habiganj: A court here today sentenced two individuals to death in connection with the rape and murder of a girl in Nabiganj upazila, a case that dates back to 2021. Alongside the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Taka 20,000 on each of the convicts.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Syeda Minhaz Um Munira, the Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3, delivered the judgment. The individuals convicted are Khalil Uddin, aged 30, and Golam Hossain, aged 35, both residents of Harinagar village in Nabiganj upazila. Public Prosecutor Advocate Kamal Uddin Selim confirmed the court's decision.
On December 26, 2021, the convicts were accused of raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl from their village. Her body was discovered in a paddy field beside the Kazir Bazar-Markuli road in Nabiganj upazila. The police retrieved the body and arranged for an autopsy at Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue.
The victim's father, Sufi Mia, filed a murder case at Nabiganj Police Station the following day, naming Khalil Uddin and Golam Hossain as the suspects. Subsequent police investigations led to a charge-sheet being submitted against the two individuals.
After hearing the testimonies of 14 prosecution witnesses, the judge reached the verdict in the presence of the convicts.
