Dhaka: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir on Sunday emphasized the necessity of enhancing the skills and capacity of police personnel to effectively combat cybercrime. The remarks were made during the inauguration of a 10-day Training of Trainers (ToT) course on cybercrime case investigation at the Police Staff College Bangladesh in Mirpur.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the IGP highlighted the dual nature of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, deepfakes, encrypted communication systems, and cloud computing. While these technologies offer new opportunities, they also present significant challenges for law enforcement agencies. Criminals are increasingly exploiting these technologies to commit various cybercrimes, including online fraud, financial crimes, data theft, hacking, online harassment, and digital extortion.
The IGP stressed the evolving nature of policing, which now requires developing investigation capacity to address the growing threat of cybercrime. He pointed out the importance of modern policing in tackling these issues and emphasized that the training course would equip officers not only with technical skills but also with training and communication skills necessary for effective dissemination of knowledge.
He urged the participating officers to share the skills acquired during the training with other investigators to enhance overall capacity. The IGP expressed gratitude to the Training Wing of Police Headquarters and the Police Staff College Bangladesh for organizing the timely training. He also underscored the importance of regularly updating training materials and modules to keep pace with evolving cybercrime tactics.
The event was presided over by Police Staff College Bangladesh Rector and Additional IGP Kazi Md Fazlul Karim, with CID chief and Additional IGP Barrister Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain attending as a special guest. DIG (Training) Md Ekramul Habib delivered the welcome address, while Additional DIG (Training-2) Dr Mosammat Shehela Parveen presented the roadmap and implementation strategy for cybercrime investigation training. The course, organized by the Training Branch of Police Headquarters, aims to train 332 police officers who will subsequently provide training to field-level investigators.
