Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir announced Bangladesh's intent to 'reset' its bilateral relationship with India, following years of what he described as an uncomfortable period under an 'authoritarian, corrupt, and exploitative' regime. Kobir emphasized the desire for a fresh start through bilateral discussions rather than multilateral forums.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Kobir addressed the need to move away from the prevailing 'India fascination,' suggesting that Bangladesh should focus on nurturing a balanced bilateral relationship with its neighbor. He stressed the importance of direct engagement through bilateral visits, rather than relying on meetings at multilateral events, to improve relations.
Kobir clarified that while his remarks were particularly directed toward India, this approach does not preclude Bangladesh from engaging with other countries during international forums. He assured that issues such as recent incidents along the Bangladesh-India border would be managed through diplomatic channels, adhering to international laws and existing agreements.
The State Minister also touched on the ongoing review of 101 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), indicating they are under parliamentary scrutiny. As Bangladesh prepares to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave for New York, where he will present Bangladesh's new vision and future aspirations.
Kobir highlighted the Prime Minister's busy agenda in New York, including meetings with various world leaders. While discussing the focus of Bangladesh's participation in the UNGA, he mentioned a sideline event addressing the Rohingya crisis, which remains a major priority for the country.
In response to inquiries about a potential sideline meeting with US President Donald Trump, Kobir noted that such meetings are often arranged at the last moment and emphasized that the primary focus of the visit is the Prime Minister's address at the UN General Assembly. Details of any additional sideline meetings will be disclosed as they are confirmed.
