Dhaka: All 50 parliamentary committees of the current 13th Parliament have been formed following the constitution of four additional committees on Thursday. The newly established committees will oversee the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Public Administration, and Public Undertakings.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Chief Whip, Nurul Islam Moni, proposed the formation of these committees and the reconstitution of several existing ones, which were subsequently approved by a voice vote in the House. Notably, each of the four new committees is chaired by a BNP lawmaker. Md Ashraf Uddin (Narsingdi-5) will chair the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Defence, while Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu (Shariatpur-3) will lead the committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Sayeed Ahmed (Shariatpur-1) has been appointed as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration, and Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni (Barguna-2) will chair the committee on Public Undertakings. Additionally, several existing parliamentary committees have been reconstituted, albeit with no changes to their leadership.
The reconstituted committees include those responsible for Private Members' Bills and Resolutions, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the Jatiya Sangsad, 50 committees exist, comprising 39 standing committees on ministries and 11 subject-based committees.
Currently, all parliamentary committees, except for the Public Accounts Committee chaired by Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher, are led by ruling party lawmakers.
