Dhaka: State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on Thursday addressed questions in the Bangladesh Parliament, focusing on the ongoing Rohingya crisis and security concerns at the country's borders. Kobir accused the previous government of failing to take effective measures for the repatriation of Rohingyas, attributing the prolonged crisis to their lack of initiative.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Kobir emphasized the current government's commitment to ensuring the safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas to Myanmar, highlighting that the solution to the crisis lies within Myanmar's borders. The government is actively pursuing diplomatic solutions at various levels to address the issue. Kobir underscored the importance of maintaining high-level communications with international partners and exploring diverse diplomatic avenues to advance their efforts.
Kobir also revealed the formation of a National Action Strategy Formulation Committee on Rohingya Affairs and a committee focused on maintaining peace and security in refugee camps. The upcoming United Nations General Assembly session will feature a high-level event on the Rohingya issue, with hopes that the Prime Minister will serve as a keynote speaker to consolidate international support.
In response to concerns about border security, Kobir stated that the government is actively working to improve relations with India on an equitable basis, addressing incidents of push-ins along the border with formal protests to the Indian government. The state minister assured that measures are being taken to uphold the country's sovereignty and prevent further incidents.
Kobir also addressed economic goals, including attracting foreign direct investment and improving the capacity of Bangladesh's diplomatic missions, which have been restructured for accountability. Efforts continue towards the incorporation of nuclear power technology, with plans for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant advancing and discussions for potential Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology underway.
The session concluded with a report on the status of Bangladeshi nationals imprisoned abroad, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts to navigate legal processes in foreign jurisdictions.
