Dhaka: BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has emphasized the indispensability of media freedom for fostering and strengthening democracy and ensuring the rule of law. Rizvi, speaking as the chief guest at the 31st founding anniversary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), highlighted the critical role of media in reducing crime and bribery by maintaining objectivity.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizvi shared his longstanding relationship with the DRU, considering it a refuge during challenging times. He expressed concern that despite the proliferation of television channels and newspapers over the past 17 years, freedom of expression has been limited to only one individual and one political party. Those who attempted to voice dissent were reportedly subjected to enforced disappearances or imprisonment.
Rizvi referred to the July mass uprising, questioning the potential consequences had it not occurred. He criticized the control over media outlets, talk shows, and social media, while acknowledging the perseverance of grassroots journalists in keeping democratic ideals alive. He urged journalists to verify news before publication and to courageously publish the truth despite potential risks.
Rizvi advocated for the media's independent and impartial role, akin to that of the administration and judiciary, to ensure the rule of law under a democratic government. He commended journalists who risked their lives during the anti-fascist movement, underscoring the importance of dignifying the profession of journalism through courageous reporting.
State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid also addressed the gathering, acknowledging the media as a vital link between the state and the populace. He praised journalists for highlighting societal issues and emphasized the core values of journalism: truthfulness, objectivity, professionalism, and responsibility.
Rashid acknowledged the dual challenges posed by the rapid dissemination of news in the information technology era, including the spread of rumors and misinformation. He stressed the necessity of ensuring accuracy alongside speed in news delivery. He also noted ongoing development and reforms in sectors like road transport and railway connectivity, urging the media to provide objective, fact-based reporting to aid government and policymakers.
The DRU program was chaired by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and conducted by General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel.
