Narayanganj: The Kanchpur-Ilisha ferry service is set to be formally inaugurated tomorrow, offering a direct connection between Narayanganj and the island district of Bhola. Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam will preside over the inauguration at the Kanchpur Ferry Terminal in Narayanganj.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ferry service on the Kanchpur-Ilisha route commenced on a trial basis on August 27, with the objective of linking Bhola directly to the mainland. Currently, two ferries operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Begum Sufia Kamal and Begum Rokeya, are serving the route.
One ferry departs daily from each terminal, completing a journey between Kanchpur and Bhola, or vice versa, in approximately eight hours. BIWTC officials report that since the trial launch, the ferry service has been well-received by the people of Bhola, with businesspeople and truck drivers particularly appreciating the route’s convenience.
Officials from BIWTC also noted that the new ferry service is expected to expand opportunities and improve access for Bhola residents across various sectors, including transportation, education, healthcare, and trade and commerce.
