Dhaka: Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker today announced that the upcoming local government elections will commence with the union parishad (UP) polls, with a comprehensive election roadmap set to be unveiled later this month. Speaking to journalists at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, he outlined the initial steps of the election process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commissioner emphasized the commission's intent to hold the UP elections first, followed by elections for city corporations, municipalities, and other local government bodies. "We hope the local government polls will begin with the union parishad elections. Once the UP elections reach a certain stage, we will hold elections to city corporations, municipalities and other local government bodies, InShaAllah," said Anwarul.
Addressing questions about the election timeline, Anwarul mentioned that the announcement for the UP election schedule could be expected within the next two weeks. He highlighted the ongoing preparation of the election roadmap and the rapid progress being made in this regard.
The commissioner also noted the logistical challenges posed by the examination schedules of educational institutions, which serve as polling centers. He mentioned that the commission is contemplating scheduling the elections either before or after the examination period in November and December.
Furthermore, Anwarul revealed that the commission is implementing advanced security measures, including bringing polling centers under CCTV surveillance and utilizing drones to facilitate law enforcement. The number of body-worn cameras will also increase to ensure enhanced oversight. The commission is also actively working to counter misinformation.
Regarding the code of conduct for the upcoming elections, Anwarul stated that stricter rules will be enforced, similar to those in the national parliamentary elections. Provisions will prevent VIPs from using government facilities for election campaigns, and the use of non-perishable materials and posters will be banned. A gazette notification on the amended conduct code is expected soon.
Anwarul also touched upon the participation of MPO-listed teachers in elections, indicating that their involvement raises concerns about neutrality. He shared that the commission has recommended to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives that these teachers should refrain from contesting elections to maintain political neutrality in educational institutions.
In relation to the by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, the commissioner assured that the election would be conducted within the legally mandated 90-day period, with the schedule to be announced shortly.
