Dhaka: Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon announced today that the government plans to award Tk 1 lakh each to 100 selected teachers as part of the World Teachers' Day celebrations. The initiative aims to honor educators for their significant contributions to the education system.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement was made prior to the commencement of the first meeting of the national steering committee, which has been formed to organize the World Teachers' Day events. The meeting took place in the conference room of the education ministry at the Secretariat. Dr. Milon emphasized the crucial role teachers play as the main driving force behind educational progress and reform. He noted that the government's primary goal is to recognize and motivate teachers who excel in their work at the grassroots level.
Dr. Milon further elaborated that the government is finalizing a policy to select the best teachers for this honor. Previously, only 12 teachers received Tk 2 lakh each. However, under the new initiative aligned with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's vision, the scope has been expanded to include a total of 100 teachers. This expansion is intended to ensure that skilled and meritorious teachers across the country receive the respect and recognition they deserve.
Addressing the issue of a code of conduct for teachers, Dr. Milon highlighted the importance of teachers serving as role models through their educated and exemplary behavior. He mentioned that the government is reviewing policies and guidelines in accordance with international standards to prevent inappropriate activities on social media and to protect the integrity of the education system.
Regarding financial matters, the minister confirmed that the overdue contributions owed to retired teachers from 2016 to August 2026 have been settled. Plans are in place to gradually disburse the remaining grant money owed by the government.
In response to a query from journalists, Secondary and Higher Education Secretary Abdul Khaleque revealed that efforts are underway to incorporate non-government teachers into the new pay scale. These teachers will receive benefits proportional to those of government employees.
The meeting was attended by Jatiya Sangsad Whip Rakibul Islam, senior ministry officials, and members of the national steering committee.
