Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member and Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, widely known as Mirza Abbas, marked his return to the 13th Parliament on Thursday with a speech emphasizing the true essence of politics as a service to the people. He underscored that Parliament should echo the hopes and aspirations of the citizens, rather than serve as a stage for political opposition.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mirza Abbas took the floor in Parliament for the first time since his election, after more than five months of absence due to health issues. His return was met with a warm welcome from Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and fellow lawmakers who applauded his presence.
Mirza Abbas, who also serves as the Prime Minister's political adviser, described the day as emotional and significant in his political journey. He reminisced about his previous tenure in the Jatiya Sangsad and paid homage to late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for their roles in Bangladesh's democratic movement.
Addressing his health status, Mirza Abbas revealed that he has been under medical treatment for approximately five and a half months, with ongoing recovery. He expressed deep appreciation to those who supported him through prayers and well-wishes during his challenging period. He also extended his gratitude to the President, Prime Minister, and the Prime Minister's Office for their concern and monitoring of his health.
Mirza Abbas urged his colleagues and constituents to continue their support and prayers, expressing his desire to dedicate himself fully to serving his constituency and the nation. His return was celebrated not only in Parliament but also by thousands of BNP leaders and activists who welcomed him at the airport upon his arrival from overseas treatment.
The lawmaker had been receiving medical care in Singapore and Malaysia following a sudden health crisis in March. After brain surgery in Dhaka, he was transferred abroad for further treatment. His election to Parliament on the BNP ticket from Dhaka-8 constituency was followed by his appointment as the Prime Minister's adviser on political affairs.
Mirza Abbas's heartfelt return to the political arena reflects his commitment to public service and his vision for a Parliament that truly represents the people's interests.
