Dhaka: Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today said regular market monitoring and supervision activities are being conducted under the initiative of the Ministry of Commerce to keep commodity prices at tolerable levels. He said this while replying to a written question from ruling party lawmaker Hamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas in the Parliament today.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Commerce Minister stated that market drives are being conducted across the country through special task forces formed at the district level and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP). 'Fines and necessary legal action are being taken under the existing laws against overcharging, hoarding, creating artificial shortages, failure to display price lists, and other irregularities in the markets,' he said.

At the same time, the minister mentioned that the Bangladesh Competition Commission is taking necessary measures against syndicates, cartels, and collusive practices to ensure fair competition in the market. The Minister further emphasized that the government's market monitoring, supervision, and legal enforcement activities to protect consumer rights and maintain price stability in the public interest will continue and be further strengthened as necessary in the future.
