Rangpur: A Rangpur court on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and two others to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Mashiur Rahman, also known as Utshya Rahman, in 2015. Rangpur District and Sessions Judge Mashiur Rahman delivered the verdict.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the convicted individuals were tried in absentia. The man sentenced to death is Rubel alias Hekram, while Alin and Shubho Kumar received life sentences. The court acquitted three others, including Johiron Akter Jui, alleged to be a drug peddler and the mastermind behind the murder, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.
The case unfolded when journalist Mashiur Rahman, who worked for Dainik Juger Alo, went missing on December 23, 2015, after leaving his home for work. His lifeless body was later discovered in Dharma Das, Rangpur city, with his hands and legs bound to a tree.
Following the tragic discovery, Mashiur's mother, Nurjahan Begum Nuri, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station. Subsequently, police submitted a charge sheet against eight individuals, and the court proceeded to frame charges against six of them.
