Dhaka: State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mir Shahe Alam, announced today that the local government elections will be conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner within the current fiscal year. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he emphasized the commitment of the democratic government to hold elections as scheduled.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement follows a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, at the Secretariat. State Minister Mir Shahe Alam was also present during the meeting. Post-meeting, Shahe Alam highlighted that Trivedi’s visit was a courtesy call and included discussions on India’s experience with local government elections.
Shahe Alam affirmed that the elections would proceed within the current fiscal year, reinforcing the government’s dedication to democratic processes. The meeting also covered bilateral interests, focusing on political and economic topics. The state minister expressed interest in leveraging India’s experience in local government elections, indicating that discussions with the High Commissioner included such topics.
The Indian envoy’s visit coincided with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) founding anniversary, during which he extended greetings to BNP leaders and activists.
