Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday emphasized that Bangladesh’s sustainable progress and development can be secured through a robust and effective democratic system. During a courtesy meeting with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary Anda Filip at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, he remarked, “We believe that sustainable progress and development of the country can be ensured through an effective and strong democratic system.”
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister reflected on Bangladesh’s journey to democracy, highlighting the long struggle endured to restore it. He expressed optimism about further strengthening the democratic system and noted the sacrifices made by many party leaders and activists who faced enforced disappearances, killings, and false cases during this struggle.
“Finally, through the February 12 election, we were able to pave the way for democratic practice in the country,” he stated, acknowledging the restoration of both multiparty and parliamentary democracy by his party, BNP. Despite challenges, Tarique reiterated his commitment to democracy and the high expectations of the people from it. His government is focused on safeguarding constitutional rights and ensuring essential services for citizens.
Anda Filip commended Tarique’s leadership and his active involvement in parliamentary sessions, which she deemed a testament to his dedication to parliamentary democracy. She lauded the initiatives outlined in BNP’s election manifesto, particularly in the education sector and community-based programs. Filip also acknowledged Bangladesh’s advancements in parliamentary democracy and emphasized the importance of continued progress to bolster public confidence in democratic institutions.
Expressing the IPU’s interest in enhancing cooperation with the Bangladesh Parliament, Anda Filip anticipated that the participation of the Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament in the 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania would further strengthen bilateral relations.
The discussion also touched upon civic awareness and women’s empowerment. Filip shared her observations of meeting young and enthusiastic women lawmakers, while Tarique underscored his government’s commitment to women’s empowerment. He outlined plans for free education up to the honors level for women and stipends for female students to promote financial independence and decision-making participation within families.
State Minister-1 for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and State Minister-2 Shama Obaed were also present at the meeting.
