Dhaka: The Dhaka University syndicate has declared Md Rashed Khan the general secretary (GS) of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) from the 2019 election, revoking the election of then Bangladesh Chhatra League secretary Golam Rabbani to the post. The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting held on Monday night, the university’s acting registrar confirmed.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Rashed Khan was the second-highest vote-getter in the 2019 DUCSU election. Earlier, Dhaka University formed a probe committee following allegations over Rabbani’s studentship. Based on the committee’s recommendations and a subsequent decision of the Academic Council, his MPhil studentship was found to be illegal, a university source stated.

The source indicated that Rabbani also failed to provide a satisfactory response to a show-cause notice issued to him, which led to his position as DUCSU GS being declared vacant. Following a legal opinion from the university’s legal adviser, the syndicate officially declared Rashed Khan as the GS, as confirmed by the registrar.

After the decision, Rashed Khan visited Dhaka University and met with the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellors. Sharing photos of the meeting on his verified Facebook account, Rashed expressed his gratitude, stating, ‘Greeting exchange with the vice chancellor and the pro vice chancellors after announcing me DUCSU GS. Countless thanks to Allah.’

Rashed Khan is currently serving as a political assistant to the prime minister of Bangladesh.
