Dhaka: The Dhaka North City unit of BNP has taken decisive action by expelling the president and general secretary of its Airport organisational ward after allegations surfaced regarding their involvement in the snatching of gold jewellery sent from Malaysia by an expatriate.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the leaders who faced expulsion are Abdur Rauf, the unit President, and Rana Hossain Rubel, the General Secretary. This decision received approval from Dhaka North City BNP Convener Md Aminul Haque and Member Secretary Mostafa Zaman.
In a related development, the Airport thana unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) also expelled its President Md Ripon Hossain and General Secretary Al Amin Hossain Shanto due to their alleged connection to the incident. The expulsion, announced through a press release by the Dhaka North City unit of JCD, was based on specific evidence pointing to a breach of organisational discipline. The press release also mandated that all JCD leaders and activists sever ties with the expelled individuals.
The case, filed by Kawsar Hossain, a Malaysian expatriate, reveals that he sent 200 grams of gold jewellery to Bangladesh on August 28 for his sister’s wedding. The jewellery was collected at the airport by Kawsar’s younger brother, Md Suman, and his friend Rohan. However, upon reaching Kawla on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, they were allegedly intercepted by Ripon, Al Amin, Rauf, and Rubel, who reportedly assaulted them and fled with the jewellery.
Following the incident, Suman filed a case at the Airport Police Station on August 29. Subsequent police action led to the arrest of Shanto and Rauf in Uttara Sector 1, where 100 grams of the stolen gold jewellery were recovered. Both individuals were placed on one-day remand.
After their remand period, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka sent the arrestees to jail, following their presentation by investigating officer Sub-Inspector Sabbir Hossain.
