Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for global unity and solidarity for holding trial of those involved in enforced disappearance. The PM made the call in a message marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances to be observed tomorrow.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the prime minister described enforced disappearances as one of the most heinous and gruesome acts, highlighting it as a global problem and a severe violation of human rights. Such crimes are particularly prevalent in countries governed by autocratic regimes. "The state security forces and law enforcement agencies often choose this brutal and ruthless path to suppress anti-government movements," he stated.
The prime minister further explained that during the ousted fascist government of Bangladesh, enforced disappearances and abductions were used inhumanely, with many people detained for extended periods at detention centers known as 'Ainaghar'. Statistics from local and international human rights organizations indicate that more than 700 people were disappeared by law enforcement agencies during the deposed regime.
To combat these crimes, Tarique Rahman announced that the present government has initiated trials following investigations into each incident. He mentioned that a legal framework is being prepared to prevent such crimes in the future. The Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Bill, 2026, and the National Human Rights Commission Bill, 2026, have been placed in parliament. The government hopes that once enacted, these acts will deter such heinous crimes.
Reflecting on the 2024 mass uprising, Rahman noted that while some individuals managed to return after the fascist government's overthrow, many, like Illius Ali and Chowdhury Alam, remain missing. He emphasized that under Article 7(2)(i) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, "enforced disappearance of persons" is recognized as a specific crime against humanity, warranting exemplary punishment.
The International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is being observed worldwide, aiming to raise global awareness against enforced disappearances, with the theme 'Victims First, Actions Now'.
