Rajshahi: Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Mamun Ahmed has emphasized the importance of students developing a sense of goodness alongside acquiring knowledge. 'The students will strive to build themselves as the architects of a prosperous, developed Bangladesh in the coming days. The nation wants to see the future of Bangladesh among the students.'
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, UGC Chairman Professor Mamun Ahmed made these remarks while addressing the orientation ceremony for students admitted to undergraduate (honours) programs for the 2025-2026 academic session at Rajshahi University (RU) as the chief guest. The event was held at the RU Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium. He further stated that one of the main objectives of education is the development of human values and expressed hope that the journey of showcasing talent and fulfilling dreams that has begun through admission to the university will continue in the future.
The orientation ceremony was presided over by RU Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam and included speeches from Pro-Vice Chancellors Professor Abdul Alim and Professor Mamunur Rashid. Students' adviser Professor A H M Khurshid Alam delivered the welcome speech, while Proctor Professor Md. Mahbubur Rahman also spoke at the event.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam welcomed the new students of RU by stating that they are now the brand ambassadors of the university. He emphasized that as stakeholders, it is their responsibility to present RU in a positive manner. He also highlighted that this arena of higher education is the cradle of freedom and free thought, but noted that this freedom is not unlimited. He expressed hope that students will reflect responsibility positively in their work and behavior.
In his address, Professor Abdul Alim mentioned that the university authorities are working with the goal of reducing session jams to zero as a primary objective. Efforts are also being made to maintain the reputation and international ranking of the university by prioritizing education and research. He noted, 'We are also working on plans for improving the quality of education and some other issues. Students will notice the benefits of these in future.'
The orientation program concluded with a cultural event, marking the beginning of the academic journey for the new students.
