Ulaanbaatar: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo held four bilateral meetings with representatives of India, Mongolia, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The focus of these discussions was on addressing land degradation, drought, and climate resilience.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meetings underscored the importance of regional and international partnerships in tackling cross-border challenges such as climate change and land degradation. Minister Mintoo emphasized Bangladesh's willingness to share its experiences while learning from the successful initiatives of other countries.
During a meeting with Indian Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, the two sides deliberated on expanding environmental and climate cooperation. Discussions covered climate-resilient agriculture, water-resource management, drought-risk reduction, and forest conservation. They also explored cooperation in renewable energy, focusing on solar power and other clean technologies.
In talks with Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh, the focus was on strengthening diplomatic relations and bilateral trade. They discussed increasing Bangladesh's exports and creating employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in Mongolia's various sectors. The importance of government-to-government arrangements and migrant worker protection was also highlighted.
The meeting with IOM Deputy Director General for Operations Ugochi Daniels revolved around the links between climate change and migration. They discussed strengthening resilience in climate-vulnerable communities and ensuring safe migration. The need for stronger international cooperation in addressing climate-induced mobility was emphasized.
A subsequent meeting with Mongolian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sandag-Ochir Tsend explored institutionalizing environmental cooperation through a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Discussions included land restoration, climate adaptation, and capacity building. Bangladesh expressed interest in Mongolia's experience in rangeland management and drought resilience.
Minister Mintoo expressed hope that these meetings would enhance practical cooperation and strengthen Bangladesh's international partnerships in environment, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
