Jhenaidah: Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Saturday emphasized Bangladesh's autonomy in foreign policy decisions, stating that the nation will independently decide on joining the Mecca Pact. He acknowledged India's separate approach, asserting, 'India will act as India, and Bangladesh will act as Bangladesh.'
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister highlighted the government's commitment to enacting a stringent law aimed at preventing enforced disappearances and establishing a robust human rights commission. He noted that a final decision in this regard is expected in Sunday's session. His comments were made during a press interaction at a reception for meritorious students held at Jhenaidah Collectorate School and College.
Further discussing national initiatives, the minister underscored the government's focus on implementing the e-Judiciary project to enhance judicial efficiency and reduce case backlogs, with plans for project completion within a year. Addressing historical grievances, Asaduzzaman mentioned that families affected by alleged atrocities committed by the Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini from 1972 to 1974 in Jhenaidah could pursue legal avenues for justice. He assured that the courts would consider such cases positively if sought.
Responding to infrastructure concerns, the minister acknowledged the slow progress of the six-lane highway construction in Jhenaidah and the poor road conditions. He pledged to engage with relevant authorities to expedite the project and improve road conditions, easing commuter challenges. On legal challenges impeding the construction of a modern multi-storey supermarket in Jhenaidah municipality, Asaduzzaman said he would investigate potential resolutions to the issues raised by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA).
Reaffirming the government's zero-tolerance stance on corruption, the minister indicated that actions against corrupt officials had commenced in Jhenaidah, urging public support for these measures. On national security, he stated that the government is diligently working to maintain law and order across the country.
The reception was presided over by Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Noman Hossain, with notable attendees including Prime Minister's Political Assistant Rashed Khan, District Council Administrator Abdul Majid, Executive Officer Selim Reza, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division Rathindra Nath Ray, and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dipa Rani Sarkar.
