Dhaka: BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday stated that no individual or institution should remain above the law, emphasizing the necessity for impartial investigations and justice in every case of enforced disappearance. Rizvi's remarks come as part of his message for the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed on August 30. He highlighted the BNP's commitment to uncovering the truth behind these incidents and holding those responsible accountable, as essential conditions for establishing justice.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rizvi expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with victims of enforced disappearance and their families, advocating for truth, justice, and accountability. He paid respect to individuals worldwide who have suffered from enforced disappearances and those victimized during years of state repression and authoritarian rule in Bangladesh. Rizvi described enforced disappearance as a severe violation of human freedom, dignity, justice, and the right to life.
Rizvi further elaborated on the profound pain endured by families, who are left in uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones, emphasizing that no family should have to endure such suffering. He criticized the use of enforced disappearance as a tool of political repression in Bangladesh's recent history, affecting many opposition political party members, human rights defenders, and dissenters.
He underscored the ongoing plight of families who remain unaware of their loved ones' whereabouts or conditions, calling it a profound responsibility before the national conscience. Rizvi concluded by urging the assurance of victims' rights to truth, justice, compensation, and proper rehabilitation.
