Dhaka: Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to mount a strong challenge during their upcoming Test series in South Africa. Bangladesh recently concluded a landmark series in Australia, where they drew the series despite a mixed performance.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Bangladesh’s tour of Australia marked their first visit in 23 years and their second ever to the country. The team showcased a commendable performance, particularly in the first Test in Darwin, where they dominated Australia to the brink of a historic series victory. However, they faced a setback in the second Test in Mackay, suffering defeat by an innings and 51 runs within two days. Despite being dismissed twice under 100 runs, Bangladesh’s overall performance earned them respect on the international stage.
De Villiers, known as Mr. 360 degree for his innovative batting, is optimistic about Bangladesh’s prospects in South Africa. He emphasized the effectiveness of Bangla
desh’s fast bowlers during the Australian tour, which could pose a challenge for South African batters. He acknowledged the difficulty of playing in South African conditions, where the ball swings after pitching and moves off the seam, a challenge for many international players.
In a podcast, de Villiers shared insights on tackling South African pitches, advising Bangladesh’s batters to adopt a proactive approach rather than merely surviving. Drawing from his own experience, he suggested varying strategies such as advancing down the crease or altering guard positions based on the situation.
Bangladesh is set to tour South Africa in November, playing two Test matches, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The first Test will take place in Johannesburg from November 15 to 19, followed by the second in Centurion from November 23 to 27. Bangladesh is yet to secure a Test victory against South Africa, a challenge they aim to overcome in this series.
