Dhaka: BNP acting Secretary General and Prime Minister's Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday stated that former President Ziaur Rahman officially recognized Kazi Nazrul Islam as the national poet of Bangladesh.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rizvi made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion and cultural programme titled 'Ami Hobo Sokal Belar Pakhi', held as part of the Nazrul Barsha celebrations at the National Theatre Hall in Segunbagicha. He emphasized that Ziaur Rahman was a true statesman who understood the importance of mental and cultural development for national progress, particularly among children.
Rizvi highlighted that Ziaur Rahman introduced popular children's competitions such as 'Notun Kuri' on Bangladesh Television, a platform from which many renowned artistes and actors emerged. He praised Nazrul's contribution to children's literature, citing his unique influence on young minds and his encouragement for the younger generation to advance in science and knowledge.
He further noted that Ziaur Rahman's poetic sensibility led him to recognize that Bangladesh's culture would be incomplete without Nazrul's contributions. By granting Nazrul state recognition, Ziaur Rahman honored his legacy as the national poet.
Addressing current societal issues, Rizvi expressed concern over drug abuse and criminal activities affecting young people. He advocated for the increased study and practice of Nazrul's works, which he believes purify the mind and inspire resistance against injustice.
