Dhaka: Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury recently emphasized the importance of building an economy in Bangladesh that thrives on knowledge, innovation, and the ingenuity of its people rather than solely depending on traditional growth sources. He made these remarks during a special event organized by the Finance Division, where he handed over grant certificates to 12 projects under the Bangladesh Industry Research, Development and Innovation (BIRDI) initiative.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Finance Minister stated that the Finance Division views research and development as an investment in productivity, export diversification, green technology, and high-skilled employment for the youth. He highlighted this perspective by saying, "A bird takes flight not because the sky is easy, but because its wings are ready. Today, with these twelve projects, the BIRDI has taken flight - and we will make sure it soars."
The BIRDI grants are part of a Finance Division initiative supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aimed at promoting practical research and innovation to address industry needs. The Skills for Industry Competitiveness and Innovation Program (SICIP) recognized researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs selected under the BIRDI initiative for their contributions to strengthening Bangladesh's industrial capacity.
Finance Division Secretary and National Program Director of SICIP Dr. Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder noted that the grants are designed to catalyze practical, industry-relevant solutions that can enhance productivity, strengthen competitiveness, and expand the country's skills base. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with SICIP's vision of "Illuminating Bangladesh through Skills."
ADB Bangladesh Resident Mission Country Director Qingfeng Zhang highlighted the continued partnership with the Bangladesh government in advancing the objectives of SICIP and supporting the country's broader development goals. Additional Secretary and Executive Program Director of SICIP Mohammed Walid Hossain expressed gratitude to the guests, grant recipients, and participants for their contributions to the success of the event.
The BIRDI initiative is expected to bolster collaboration between industry and research institutions, while encouraging innovation-driven solutions to improve industrial productivity and competitiveness.
