Rajshahi: Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) has implemented a zero-tolerance approach towards drug-related activities in an effort to establish a crime-free and secure city environment, stated RMP Commissioner Mohammad Foyzul Kabir.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the commissioner highlighted that controlling the drug trade could significantly reduce crime rates in the city. He emphasized that no drug dealer would be allowed to operate without facing consequences. Drugs primarily enter Rajshahi through Chapainawabganj and Godagari upazila, and are then distributed across the city. To disrupt this supply chain, RMP has increased police checkpoints at all city entry points, leading to the seizure of yaba, tapentadol tablets, and cannabis, along with the arrest of those involved.
The intensified police efforts have reportedly put drug dealers in a difficult position, as regular patrols and raids are conducted, particularly in known drug hotspots like ID Bagan and Guripara. Police, alongside the Met
ropolitan Detective Branch and the Crime Response Team (CRT), are actively involved in these operations. Commissioner Kabir noted a decrease in the number of drug sellers and users due to these ongoing drives.
He further mentioned that all RMP police stations have been directed to maintain regular checkpoints and conduct anti-drug operations within their respective areas. Updates on these operations are consistently shared on the RMP’s website and social media platforms, with Deputy Police Commissioner Gaziur Rahman providing additional information through press conferences.
On the subject of juvenile gangs, Kabir explained that traffic checkpoints are aiding in the arrest of gang members, aiming to curb crimes such as eve-teasing. He called for the continued support of city residents in these efforts, acknowledging their cooperation as crucial to achieving these goals.
In addressing future plans, Kabir expressed the desire of Rajshahi’s residents to live peacefully without disturbances. To tackle traffic
congestion, the RMP is conducting checks on motorcycles without valid documentation, and ensuring rickshaws and auto-rickshaws comply with regulations. The RMP is also collaborating with the Rajshahi City Corporation to regulate these vehicles and prevent unauthorized entry into the city.
The transport department of the city corporation is preparing to assist in these efforts, indicating a coordinated approach to maintaining order in Rajshahi.
