Dhaka: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku today emphasized the need for the government to focus on enhancing the export of fish and fish products. He stated that the fisheries sector has now reached a level where it can meet domestic demand, thereby allowing for increased export activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the National Fisheries Fortnightly-2026, held at the Department of Fisheries (DoF) conference room. Bangladesh’s fish and seafood exports, which include frozen shrimp, crabs, and various indigenous or marine fish species, generate around USD 296 million (over Tk 6,000 crore) annually from exports to over 50 countries.
The event was organized by the DoF, with its Director General Dr. M Khaled Kanak presiding. The decision to hold the central programs of the National Fisheries Fortnightly in Kishorganj, outside the capital, reflects the region’s importance in fisheries production, particularly in sweet water fisheries.
The state minister also highlighted historical initiatives taken by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to develop the agriculture and fisheries sector, such as river dredging and canal re-excavation. He mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is continuing efforts to advance these sectors.
Tuku acknowledged the efforts of DoF officials and employees in organizing the program and urged them to prioritize public welfare in their duties. He also outlined the government’s future plans for the fisheries sector, mentioning that instructions have been received to undertake development projects.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary M Delwar Hossen, speaking as a special guest, stressed the importance of the ministry and DoF working diligently to provide necessary services to fish farmers and the general public. He warned of accountability measures for any negligence in duty.
The DoF DG noted that the central program of the national fisheries fortnightly was last held outside the capital in 2003. The recent event at Katiadi in Kishorganj marked a significant occasion, attended by senior ministry and fisheries department officials, employees, fish farmers, and representatives from various professions.
