Mirsarai: The development of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) Economic Zone (EZ) in Mirsarai has resulted in a significant saving of approximately Tk 134.25 crore in public funds. The project was completed at a total cost of Tk 1,168.66 crore, significantly lower than the original estimate of Tk 1,302.91 crore, positioning the zone to generate substantial returns for the government through investment, exports, employment, and economic activities.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Project Director of the BEPZA Economic Zone, Mohammad Anamul Haque, highlighted the project as a model of efficient financial management and successful implementation. All major infrastructure development works, including land development, roads, drains, and factory buildings, have been completed. Of the 539 industrial plots developed, 401 have been allocated to local and foreign investors.

The economic zone has seen a positive response from investors, with lease agreements signed with 65 enterprises. Among these, 14 enterprises have commenced production, contributing to exports worth around US$58.18 million and creating employment for approximately 4,500 Bangladeshis. The enterprises, which include Chinese, South Korean, Canadian, and Bangladeshi ownership, produce a diverse range of products, from readymade garments to high-tech items like drones.

The zone, spanning 1,138.55 acres, offers investors facilities such as duty-free import and export, tax holidays, and one-stop services. Its strategic location near the port enhances its appeal. Infrastructure enhancements, including a 30MW-capacity substation and utility networks, have been developed to support existing investors.

BEPZA is committed to developing the zone as an environmentally friendly industrial hub, with 19.60 percent of the area dedicated to green space and water bodies. The project director emphasized the zone's role in Bangladesh's industrialization, combining employment generation, technology transfer, and environmental sustainability. Upon reaching full capacity, the zone is expected to generate annual export earnings of $4-5 billion and create jobs for around 500,000 Bangladeshis.
