Munshiganj: A total of 544 deep tube wells are being installed across the district to ensure safe drinking water supply and address the shortage of potable water in the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has planned the installation of eight deep tube wells in each of the 68 unions across the district's six upazilas during the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Of the total installations, 72 tube wells will be positioned in nine unions of Sadar upazila, 112 in 14 unions of Sreenagar, 112 in 14 unions of Sirajdikhan, 80 in 10 unions of Louhajang, 104 in 13 unions of Tongibari, and 64 in eight unions of Gazaria.
The initiative aims to provide safe drinking water to a large number of rural residents. It also seeks to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and ensure access to arsenic-free water, particularly in arsenic-prone areas.
DPHE Executive Engineer Mohammad Humayun Kabir informed BSS that the allocation of tube wells would prioritize areas experiencing shortages of safe drinking water and where groundwater levels have decreased.
He stated that field-level committees would select sites for the tube wells to guarantee installation in the most needed areas. Each tube well will be approximately 700 feet deep, supplying water expected to be free from arsenic.
