Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of Abdul Quddus during a snatching incident in the Siddique Bazar area in 2016. The verdict was delivered by Dhaka's Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Md Sadekin Habib Bappy.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the court also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000 on the convicted man, Masum. In the event of non-payment, Masum will face an additional year in jail. Meanwhile, the court acquitted Yusuf, the second accused, due to a lack of evidence.
The incident occurred on September 10, 2016, when grocer Abdul Quddus was traveling by rickshaw to a bus stand early in the morning. Two robbers intercepted him in Siddique Bazar, stabbed him, and stole his belongings. Quddus was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The murder case was filed by Quddus's cousin, Md Kamal Hossain, at Bangshal Police Station on the same day of the incident. Sub-Inspector Md Shahidul Islam, the investigation officer, submitted a charge sheet against Masum and Yusuf on November 10, 2016.
The trial commenced on March 7, 2017, after charges were formally framed against the accused. Throughout the trial, the court heard testimony from 15 witnesses before reaching a verdict.
