Dhaka: State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has announced that the government has initiated a comprehensive development plan to reintegrate Bogura into the national development agenda. The district, which has experienced development disparities for almost 17 years, is set to undergo significant transformations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister highlighted that Bogura's development had been neglected due to political reasons, notably being the birthplace of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. In an interview at his office in the Secretariat, he detailed the government's plans to rejuvenate Bogura across various sectors such as infrastructure, industrialisation, education, communication, environmental conservation, and employment.
Shahe Alam emphasized that Bogura is crucial as the gateway to the northern region, yet its development has been stunted due to political factors. The current government is committed to addressing this imbalance and ensuring equitable development across all districts, not favoring any particular region but eliminating longstanding disparities.
He outlined that specific initiatives are being undertaken to align Bogura's development with the national average, with short, medium, and long-term plans being implemented under the prime minister's directives. These plans include upgrading local infrastructure, modernising educational institutions, setting up industries, improving the environment, and strengthening local government institutions.
A significant development includes the upgrade of Bogura Airport to international standards and the establishment of a Bangladesh Air Force air base for the northern region. Future plans also entail adding new fighter aircraft to the base and setting up a drone manufacturing plant in collaboration with Turkey, which is expected to spur high-tech industries and create skilled employment opportunities.
In education, efforts are underway to operationalize Bogura University, transforming it into a science and technology-focused institution, thereby expanding access to modern education for students in the northern region.
The state minister also addressed the improvement of the communication system, highlighting the approval of a new 72-kilometre railway project from Sirajganj to Bogura. This project aims to enhance passenger and freight transportation, reduce travel time and costs, and stimulate regional economic activities.
Infrastructure development in roads, bridges, and culverts is progressing to alleviate public suffering caused by long-standing neglect. The Local Government Engineering Department is spearheading these developments to ensure tangible benefits for the residents of Bogura.
On environmental conservation, the government is actively engaged in tree plantation programs along re-excavated canals, rivers, and water bodies to maintain ecological balance and preserve biodiversity. One such programme was recently launched on the Barail-Bakshan Canal banks in Shibganj upazila of Bogura.
Addressing concerns over budget allocations, the state minister clarified that Bogura has not received disproportionate allocations compared to other districts. The allocations aim to mitigate the district's historical development deficit, not to provide special privileges.
Mir Shahe Alam, reflecting on his political journey, committed to staying connected with the populace and fulfilling their expectations with utmost sincerity. He reiterated that the development of Bogura is integral to the broader economic progress of the northern region, with future plans integrating industry, agriculture, education, communication, environment, and local governance.
The state minister concluded by urging cooperation from the public, representatives, the administration, and the media to transform Bogura into a modern, promising district. He expressed optimism that with collective efforts, Bogura will become a model of modern and sustainable development in the northern region.
