Rajshahi: Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has embarked on an initiative to establish a digital database of artists, writers, and poets nationwide. This effort aims to foster a healthy cultural environment, as announced by Director General Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, also known as Rezauddin Stalin, during an event at the Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the database will allow authorities in Dhaka to access comprehensive information about artists and their works from across the country. Rezauddin Ahmed emphasized the importance of promoting a healthy cultural environment to counter unhealthy cultural practices, particularly in rural areas. Efforts are underway to modernize traditional forms like Jatra Pala and to present drama and puppetry in innovative ways.
Ahmed also mentioned that cultural agreements with 42 countries would enable Bangladeshi artists to engage in international cultural programs. Despite budgetary constraints, with a total budget of Tk 104 crore-most of which is allocated for salaries-efforts are being made to adequately recognize eminent artists.
The Shilpakala awards and honors, paused for two years, will resume this year to acknowledge deserving artists and cultural figures in every district. The selection process has started in Naogaon, with plans to form a committee in Rajshahi soon.
Ahmed highlighted ongoing institutional reforms, including amending laws and regulations to appoint deputy directors at the district level and directors at the divisional level to fortify the Academy's administrative structure.
He also assured attendees that necessary funds would be allocated for the renovation of the Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy auditorium and for measures to address termite infestations. Concluding the event, Ahmed, identifying himself as a poet, shared one of his poems.
The event was attended by District Cultural Officer Farukur Rahman Faisal, dance director Hasib Panna, and various cultural activists, organizers, writers, poets, and litterateurs.
