Dhaka: Bangladesh and Canada engaged in discussions on Wednesday to address mutual priorities, particularly focusing on strategies to prevent fraud and irregular migration while promoting legitimate migration pathways and seeking a sustainable resolution to the Rohingya crisis.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh met with Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman to explore avenues for strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two nations. They discussed building on over five decades of friendship, supported by more than $6.3 billion in development assistance from Canada, which includes over $600 million allocated for the Rohingya crisis since 2017.
With two-way trade reaching over $4 billion in 2025, both countries examined opportunities to expand their commercial relationship, aiming to provide benefits to citizens of both nations. The dialogue included discussions on enhancing trade and investment in sectors such as agriculture, energy, artificial intelligence, education, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), civil aviation, security, and defense.
High Commissioner Singh extended his congratulations to Foreign Minister Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. Singh reaffirmed Canada's commitment to collaborating closely with Rahman during his tenure to advance UN reforms and build a better future for people globally.
