Dhaka: The current term of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) 2025 is set to conclude on September 12. In response, the Dhaka University unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir has called for the immediate release of a detailed roadmap for the forthcoming DUCSU election, emphasizing the necessity of a timely and transparent electoral process.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the organization urged the announcement of an election schedule, advocating for a free, fair, impartial, and participatory election within the specified timeframe. The demand was made during a meeting with Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam on Wednesday. After the meeting, Chhatra Shibir President Muhammad Muhiuddin and Organizing Secretary Sazzad Hossain Khan addressed journalists.
Muhiuddin highlighted that the DUCSU election is a routine institutional process. However, with the end of the current term approaching, the university administration has not provided clarity on the timing or method for the next election. He noted that the university treasurer indicated no decision has been made regarding the election, stalling the process of notifying the University Grants Commission (UGC) and securing the necessary budget.
He also pointed out the historical tendency to suspend DUCSU elections under various political regimes, which feared the potential influence of DUCSU as a student platform. Muhiuddin stressed the need for justice concerning recent incidents involving attacks on students, representatives, and journalists, alleging administrative delays in taking action despite available evidence.
Muhiuddin revealed that the administration promised to release the investigation report by Sunday or Monday, warning of strong measures if the report is not published on time. Meanwhile, Organizing Secretary Sazzad Hossain criticized the administration for delaying the DUCSU election process, attributing obstructions to political influences from the ruling party.
He accused the administration of quickly yielding to political pressure on various issues while hesitating to address attacks on student representatives. Chhatra Shibir also demanded institutional support for DUCSU representatives to fulfill their roles effectively.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Obaidul Islam assured that the administration would soon convene necessary meetings to follow the established election process. He indicated plans were already in place and, despite his current schedule, meetings would be arranged shortly to initiate the process.
