Chattogram: Two students from the 24th batch of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have tragically drowned while bathing in a pond on the campus. The incident occurred in the pond located next to CUET's Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall this afternoon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deceased were Arnab Chanda, 22, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Shanto Dev, 23, a student of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE). Both were students of the 2024-25 academic session and hailed from Sylhet district. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station Saiful Islam confirmed the fatalities of the two students and stated that further legal proceedings are underway regarding the incident.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that Arnab and Shanto went to the pond to bathe with friends after playing football in the afternoon. While swimming, they ventured into the deeper part of the pond and subsequently drowned. They were later rescued and transported to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram city, where the attending doctors declared them dead.

Professor Saiful Islam, director of the Student Welfare Department at CUET, mentioned that the bodies of the deceased students are currently at the hospital, and their families have been notified. "Further arrangements will be made according to the wishes of their families," he said.

It is noteworthy that earlier on July 28, Arnab Saha, a 21st batch student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, also drowned in the same pond.
