Dhaka: Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi emphasized the importance of a mindset shift among political entities to fortify democratic processes. Speaking at a discussion organized by Odhikar at the CIRDAP auditorium, Rizvi highlighted that beyond the independent functioning of democratic institutions, political parties, their leaders, and activists must undergo a significant change in mindset to truly strengthen democracy.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rizvi, who also serves as the BNP senior joint secretary general, stressed the necessity for key democratic bodies such as the judiciary, the media, and the Election Commission to operate autonomously. He stated that democracy transcends mere academic or logical concepts, suggesting it is deeply rooted in psychological perspectives. Rizvi underscored that without the right mindset, achieving democratic goals is unattainable.
Rizvi elaborated on the natural role of opposition in a democracy, asserting that while criticism of the government is essential, it should be constructive, mutually beneficial, and forward-looking to foster smooth democratic development. He emphasized that both government and opposition must engage collaboratively to create a genuinely democratic environment.
He urged political leaders to be mindful of their rhetoric to prevent fostering a violent mindset among their followers. Rizvi asserted that regardless of legislative efforts to bolster democracy, true democratic establishment hinges on changing people’s mindsets.
Reflecting on historical events, Rizvi mentioned the potential consequences had the July 2024 mass uprising failed. He noted the legal actions taken against approximately 1,500-2,000 BNP leaders and activists since August 5, 2024, under various charges, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the party.
