Dhaka: Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam today announced that the government aims to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6-7 percent. This initiative is part of a broader effort to position tourism as a significant driver of the national economy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working towards developing a sustainable, modern, and world-class tourism industry. A comprehensive Tourism Master Plan, which includes 1,498 tourist attractions, is currently being prepared to guide the sector’s long-term growth.

Addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected Executive Committee of the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) at Gulshan Club, Afroza emphasized the importance of evidence-based policymaking. She noted that a nationwide Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) is being implemented to address data gaps, and she called for active cooperation from TOAB and other stakeholders.

The transformation of Cox’s Bazar into a regional tourism hub is a top priority for the government, Afroza stated. She expressed optimism that the new Cox’s Bazar International Airport will attract more international visitors and boost the sector’s growth.

Additionally, Afroza revealed plans to offer special discounts to expatriate Bangladeshis at state-operated hotels and motels, acknowledging their contributions to the economy.

In congratulating the new TOAB executive committee, Afroza expressed confidence in their leadership to advance Bangladesh’s tourism industry. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including National Skills Development Authority Secretary Dr. Naznin Kawsar Chowdhury, Bangladesh Tourism Corporation Chairman Md. Shamimuzzaman, and diplomatic representatives from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brunei Darussalam, Nepal, and Pakistan.
