Tangail: State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam today announced that the government will offer easy-term loans and incentives to handloom weavers to support and promote Tangail's traditional handloom industry. "Tangail sarees have received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition. Necessary steps will be taken to preserve this heritage through technological advancement and capacity-building programmes," he stated while inaugurating the newly-built Handloom Training Centre and Basic Centre at Bajitpur in Tangail.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister emphasized the government's plan to introduce modern technology and provide advanced training to improve the skills and productivity of weavers. He criticized the previous government's role in the decline of the traditional handloom sector and affirmed the current government's commitment to revitalizing the industry. This includes upgrading weavers' skills and encouraging greater participation from the younger generation.
Shariful Alam also mentioned plans to gradually reopen textile mills that were closed during the previous administration. The ceremony was attended by local lawmaker and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku as a special guest, and was chaired by Textiles and Jute Secretary Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury.
Other notable speakers at the event included Bangladesh Handloom Board Chairman Md Zakir Hossain, Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, and Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar. Earlier, the state minister and other guests visited the newly-established Handloom Training Centre and Basic Centre at Bajitpur, a renowned traditional handloom hub in Tangail district.
