Dhaka: One person has been arrested from Rajshahi on charges of making 'defamatory posts' on social media about the wife of the Prime Minister's Defense Adviser, Brigadier General (retd) A K M Shamsul Islam. The arrestee is identified as Palash Chowdhury, 48, a resident of the Malopara area of the city. A team of RAB-5's Rajshahi Sadar Company apprehended him from a rented house in the Ranibazar area of Rajshahi city in the early hours of today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, RAB stated that Palash Chowdhury was arrested as an accused found during the investigation. A press release from RAB-5 mentioned that the complainant in this case is Nur Mohammad, 30, who serves as the personal officer of the Prime Minister's Defense Adviser. On the afternoon of July 1, he discovered on Facebook that false, obscene, and defamatory statements were being circulated in the name of the Prime Minister's Defense Adviser's wife through several Facebook IDs, groups, pages, and Telegram channels.
In response to this incident, Nur Mohammad filed a case under the Cyber Security Act at Gulshan Police Station on July 2, listing the names of four individuals and accusing 10 to 12 more unidentified persons. The complaint highlighted that the dissemination of these posts on social media negatively impacted the victim's social status, causing her mental distress and subjecting her to defamation and blackmail. Following the case, Gulshan Police arrested four individuals, and as part of the ongoing investigation, Palash Chowdhury was also taken into custody.
RAB reported that during preliminary interrogation, Chowdhury admitted his involvement in the incident. The process of transferring him to Gulshan Police Station for further legal proceedings is currently underway.
