Dhaka: US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy on South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor today began his first official visit to Bangladesh, a trip expected to further strengthen bilateral strategic ties and deepen cooperation on regional security and economic issues.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen welcomed the envoy, describing Gor as a friend of Bangladesh and emphasizing that the visit would reinforce the growing partnership between the two countries. "I am delighted to welcome to Bangladesh my friend, the U.S. Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Ambassador Sergio Gor," the ambassador stated, highlighting the potential impact of the visit on Bangladesh-US strategic relations and cooperation on regional matters.
Ahead of the visit, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman described Gor's trip as an "exploratory" mission aimed at gaining a broader understanding of Bangladesh. He explained that Gor would engage not only with government officials but also with various stakeholders to gain insights into the country's dynamics. Dr. Khalilur also mentioned that Gor is expected to visit the Rohingya camps, underscoring the United States' role as the largest international contributor to the humanitarian response for the displaced Myanmar nationals.
The foreign minister emphasized the multidimensional nature of Bangladesh-US relations and expressed both nations' eagerness to elevate their partnership further.
