Dhaka: A mobile court in the Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi successfully halted a child marriage today and imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh on those involved.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation took place in Pirpur village under Khidirpur Union on Wednesday afternoon, following a tip-off about the impending marriage. Upazila Women Affairs Officer Rehana Akter, along with Monohardi Police Station, intervened to prevent the illegal event.
The mobile court's investigation revealed that the bride was only 14 years, three months, and seven days old, and a sixth-grade student at a local school. This clearly violated the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2017, prompting the court to fine the individuals responsible for organizing the marriage.
In addition to the financial penalty, the guardians of both the bride and the groom provided written undertakings, committing not to arrange the marriage until the girl reaches the legal age of 18. Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Monohardi, Md Sajib Mia, conducted the mobile court proceedings.
