Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today emphasized the government's pledge to implement a strategic plan aimed at the balanced and coordinated development of the northern region, integrating it into the mainstream economy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Iqbal highlighted during a seminar titled "Development Perspective of Five Northern Districts: Problems, Prospects and the Way Forward" held at a city convention hall, the northern region was left behind during the previous fascist regime. The current government is dedicated to achieving balanced development and integrating the northern region with the nation's mainstream economy.
Minister Iqbal further elaborated on the government's plan to revive the economy, which he described as fragile due to the policies of the now-banned Awami League era. He revealed the government's initiative to generate an additional 10,000 megawatts of electricity over the next five years to address the country's power shortage.
Reflecting on historical context, he mentioned that Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971 was a fight against inequality, but post-independence, the Awami League's governance led to the monopolization of wealth and greater inequality. He also accused the AL of distorting historical events to suit their narrative.
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam and State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari also addressed the seminar organized by the Bogura History Study and Research Welfare Organization. Shahe Alam dismissed misinformation being spread by certain groups, attributing it to the current government's achievements in curbing corruption, money laundering, and accelerating development.
Abdul Bari reiterated the government's focus on eliminating regional deprivation and inequality, emphasizing the importance of balanced development across the country. The event was chaired by Dr. CM Idris, with participation from distinguished political figures and academics, including Member of Parliament Majedur Rahman, who called for the establishment of Bogura Division to enhance administrative decentralization and public service delivery.
The seminar also featured speeches from numerous Members of Parliament, city and zila parishad administrators, and academic professionals. Dr. Matiur Rahman presented the keynote paper, and the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Belal Hossain. The session was moderated by journalist Syed Fazle Rabbi Dollar, the organization's General Secretary.
